3 beautiful inland lakes to visit in Liguria, Italy

Escape from the beach – but stay by the cool water

This cute little article was kindly prepared for us, in her native Italian, by Selene Scinicariello. Selene is a travel and gastronomy writer & blogger. She is also editor of the website Viaggi Che Mangi! – Eat That Trip! (www.viaggichemangi.com)

Selene and her partner Stefano are both from Genoa, Liguria, North West Italy. They know this gorgeous region like the back of their hands. Here Selena shares with us 3 little inland gems that you might want to visit this summer. Where you can loose yourself for a while in the calm and peaceful nature of the Ligurian hinterland, far from all the commotion of the seaside. And where the air will be a little cooler!

Selene’s recommendation on visiting Liguria

‘Liguria is about so much more than just the Riviera – make sure you visit the beautiful inland too!’ – says Selene

When we talk about Liguria, our thoughts immediately turn to the sea. The beautiful beaches and the seaside villages that follow one after the other along the coast. From La Spezia in the south on the border with Tuscany to Ventimiglia in the north on the border with France and the Cote d’Azur. But in reality, this small but perfectly formed Italian region has so much more to offer than just the Riviera.

The hinterland, in fact, holds many true wonders. From exquisite medieval villages to a series of natural areas of evocative beauty. Maybe you didn’t know, for example, that the lakes of Liguria are numerous. All of them are particularly suitable for spending a relaxing day out in the countryside, surrounded by greenery, fresh air and pristine nature.

The Ligurian lakes often have artificial origins and not all are not suitable for swimming, but they are the perfect place to immerse yourself in pleasant walks or to organize a picnic.

Below I have chosen 3 particularly fascinating Ligurian lakes that I recommend you visit.

Lago Giacopiane

Cows are relaxing on the lake shore in Liguria

Lago Giacopiane is certainly one of the most beautiful Ligurian lakes. Here, in fact, on its banks you will be able to meet cows and wild horses intent on grazing or cooling off. The lake is located near Borzonasca, in the province of Genoa. Once you arrive there you can walk along the pleasant circular path that runs around the lake. The route is about 4 km and really is suitable for anyone. On site you will find several places to have a picnic. But of course, please remember not to leave any litter behind!

Lago di Brugneto

Inside the Antola Park, not far from the village of Torriglia, is the Brugneto Lake, an artificial reservoir created in 1959. Despite its unnatural origins, the lake has integrated perfectly with the surrounding nature. Today this place is a real natural spectacle where you can organize a walk. It is especially atmospheric in the autumn when the woods are filled with chestnuts to be picked. Along the loop path that runs around the lake there are some equipped areas where you can stop for a picnic.

Lago di Osiglia

Moving to the west, in the province of Savona, you will find Lake Osiglia, another artificial basin, this one built in 1939. To make room for the lake, part of the town that once stood here was submerged and, today, on rare occasions this resurfaces. Lake Osiglia is perfect for spending a summer day. You can organize a picnic in the area equipped with a barbecue or have lunch in the L’Imbarcadero Bar & Restaurant. Then rent a pedal boat or a SUP to take a tour of the lake.

I hope I have given you some good ideas to organize a couple of days outdoors and that I have introduced you to something from my region from an alternative and little-known point of view.

Grazie Selene for this precious insight, we appreciate very much discovering new places recommended by people like you who really know and love their local area! – The Good Life Italy
